Pour spouts are not the most fun topic, but it is super important to use the correct type, clean them properly and train your staff to use and clean them in order to help boost your business. Pour spouts are crucial for speed and accuracy and to help you avoid wasted time, spillage and over-pouring.
However, there are a number of different types of alcohol pour spouts, including plastic, metal and rubber. Here are the types of pour spouts that you really need to know:
- Standard metal pourer. The standard metal pourer is one of the most common pour spouts, and they help bartenders prep drinks faster and more accurately. The long pour spout helps decrease spillage and enable precise pours. This type of pour spout usually includes a rubber seal, but there’s nothing to help prevent contamination with dust or insects.
- Tapered metal pourer. The tapered pourer allows for consistent pour speeds, accuracy and control with a medium flow rate and a rubber seal. While it is very common, it doesn’t protect against flies and other contaminants.
- Screened metal pourer. This pourer is less common and has a lower flow rate. The screens also sometimes fall into patrons’ drinks and they are a little difficult to clean. However, because of the screens, these pourers do protect against insects.
- Metal flap pourer. If you want to keep insects and debris out of your pour spout, the metal flap pourer is a great option. There is usually no effect to the pour speed, except with some thicker or stickier spirits.
- Standard all plastic pourer. Plastic pourers come in several different colors and tend to be the cheapest option. They are also fairly durable, since they are made using one piece of molded plastic. These pour spouts are very common and typically perform pretty well in pouring.
- Chromed plastic pourer. Many bartenders prefer the chromed plastic pourer, because of its control and overall look. This pour spot is very easy to clean and features a longer nozzle and larger hole for a quicker pour speed. Unfortunately, there is no way to keep insects away.
- Screened plastic pourer. Screened plastic pourers are a great option if you want to retain a fast pour speed while keeping out flies and other contaminants. However, these need to be cleaned very frequently.
- Cap-On pourer. Cap-On pourers have a lot of accuracy and help avoid contamination and evaporation. The company that sells these recommends throwing out the pourer with each emptied bottle.
- Ball pourer. Precision ball pourers are designed to allow pours of one to 1.5 ounces for stricter quality control and consistency.
Computerized pourer. Much like ball pourers, computerized pourers can distribute specific amounts, but they can also free pour.
